Welcome to “The Week Ahead” where we take a moment to provide our thoughts on what we can expect in markets and the economy during the upcoming week.
Maniac Monday is upon us – tennis fans rejoice! The Championships, Wimbledon (better known as just Wimbledon), is the world’s oldest tennis tournament and one of the four Grand Slams. The second Monday of the tournament is known as Maniac Monday, a day where all 16 remaining players from both the men’s and women’s draws are scheduled to play (along with men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles)! That’s a whole lot of tennis for one day! If a yellow tennis ball isn’t your thing (and yes, technically they’re yellow, not green) we’ll also be spoiled with an all Europe final four for the World Cup as France takes on Belgium followed by England versus Croatia. While the U.S. hasn’t done too well in soccer, looking at Wimbledon both the U.S. men and women have dominated the Open Era, with the ladies winning a dominant 29 titles and the men winning 15!
Inflation via a CPI reading will be the highlight in the week ahead along with the Fed releasing its semi-annual Monetary policy report to Congress on Friday. Given the Fed also released the FOMC minutes last week (relatively dovish, all things considering) it will be interesting to see how much trade war talk will be addressed in the report to congress. It’s clearly on the Fed’s mind (along with the rest of us!). Hopefully Maniac Monday doesn’t cross over from the tennis courts to the investment markets!
